Abstract

Universities have developed as places of higher of third level education. They figure Widely in modern society by offering a large intellectual input and stimulus to that society. Most societies, today select persons for employment on the basis of academic achievement and on the basis of a package of educational qualifications. University sometimes seem as the best way to enhancing qualifications. This view conflicts with the original concept of a University and gives rise to the current debate of 'education versus qualification'. What is the purpose of university? In order to answer this question it is necessary to examine the original reasons for the establishment of universities and how they have changed.
