A New Look at the Film Company of Ireland
Keywords:
Film Company of Ireland, Celtic Revival, early cinema, silent cinema, Abbey TheatreAbstract
This paper examines the first year of the Film Company of Ireland; from March 1916 to the just before the production of its first feature film in March 1917. This period is one of the most productive for the company with at least six short films made in various locations in Dublin, Wicklow, and Kerry. As any focus on this company to date has been on the two extant feature length films, these short films have been neglected. Using archival sources this paper focuses on these initial films, paying particular attention to thematic and topical connections to the Celtic Revival.
