Undergraduate students, Postgraduate students, and History Society Alumni are invited to submit papers to the UCC Student History Journal. Contributors must write on the prescribed theme that accompanies each issue.
We are currently accepting contributions in English and Irish.
Word Count
Adhering to word count guidelines is essential for maintaining the quality and readability of the University Student History Journal. It ensures that articles are concise and focused. Below are the word count requirements and recommendations for different types of submissions to our journal, footnotes are included in the footnotes:
Minimum: 2,000
Maximum: 3,000
Articles should present original research, offering new insights into historical topics, and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Note that the footnotes and the bibliography do not contribute towards the word count.
Formatting
Proper formatting is essential for ensuring that your submission is professional, readable, and meets the standards of the UCC Student History Journal. Please note articles submitted which do not follow the below guidelines may not be considered for inclusion in the publication. The following guidelines will help you format your article correctly:
General Formatting:
File Format: Submit your file as a Word document
Font: Use Times New Roman, 12-point font. This does not apply to the bibliography or the footnotes, which should be presented in Times New Roman, 10-point font.
Alignment: Articles should use the ‘Justify’ alignment.
Footnotes and referencing
Citation Style: Use ONLY Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition) Submissions which do not adhere to the above guidelines in their full capacity will not be considered.
Footnotes and Bibliography: Footnotes should appear at the bottom of each page on which they appear. The bibliography should appear at the end of the article and carry the title ‘Bibliography’. Footnotes and bibliography should appear in font size 10.

Deadlines for submissions are announced with individual theme announcements. Please pay close attention to these announcements.
Please note, if you are submitting as Gaeilge, it is required that you also submit an English translation of your work.
Submission Preparation Checklist
All submissions must meet the following requirements.
The submission has not been previously published, nor has it been submitted for an academic assignment.
Authors submitting a manuscript for publication confirm that it is their own work unless stated otherwise.
The submission file is in Microsoft Word (using the style sheet).
A minimum of three key words will be provided when submitting an article.
The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
Authors must disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement in their manuscript and take full responsibility.
